The Gwilliam family's close friend, Dr Jim Brockbank will be shaving-off his legendary moustache in aid of the Hannah Gwilliam Memorial Fund (Meningitis UK) on the 16th March!
Jim says, "I have known Hannah since she was born and she was like a daughter to our family. Hannah was born and brought up in Hampton until the family relocated to Pembrokeshire when she was 10 years old. We saw Hannah regularly over the years and most recently when she came to London to research various universities for the Art and Design degree she had planned to undertake.
It was wonderful to see Hannah develop over the years into such a beautiful person, she was the life and soul of any gathering, and achieved much in her short life. She loved the outdoors and had developed a great love and respect for nature, much of this was revealed in her cartoons, sketches, paintings, sculptures and poetry. Hannah was completing the Art and Design foundation diploma at Pembrokeshire College when she died.
I had a special relationship with Hannah and knowing her sense of fun, I suspect she might smile at the thought of my moustache coming off after 45 years!
Meningitis Group B is the major cause of meningococcal disease in the UK, with about 2000 cases each year, and something like 6 deaths each week. Research continues towards developing a vaccine and a variety of trials are in progress.
I agree with Dr Phil Hammond (GP and Patron of Meningitis UK) as a GP, meningitis is the disease I fear most, it can be notoriously difficult to diagnose and can strike with incredible speed.
I’d be most grateful for your help in supporting the “Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign” run by Meningitis UK.
The Big Moustache Shave Off will take place 1pm Friday the 16th March 2012 at The Park Road Surgery. Teddington."
